The Arnold & Son Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite is the latest member of the Luna Magna collection. The brand originally launched the Luna Magna in 2021. And it has one of the largest spherical moon phase complications Arnold & Son was able to feature on a timepiece. This model with a blue dial is limited to 38 pieces only.
Just like the original Luna Magna version, this one comes in a 44-millimeter red gold case. But the dial has changed. The main dial is a blue PVD-treated slice of meteorite, with a criss-cross, jagged geometric structure, known as the Widmanstätten patterns. But also known as the Thomson structures. The Austrian Count Alois von Beckh Widmanstätten discovered those patterns or structures in 1808 when heating up pieces of iron meteorites. The director of the Mineral and Zoology Cabinet in Vienna, Austria, later named these structures after Widmanstätten.
Widmanstätten patterns or Thomson structures?
But as always in times of great inventions and discoveries, the English mineralogist William Thomson, found those patterns too, however four years earlier. He published about it around 1804 but due to wars in Europa – he was in Italy at the time of discovery – the story wasn’t wide-spread. Sideline information, let’s go back to the main feature of the Luna Magna.
The three-dimensional moon on the dial is the center of attraction, a sphere shape where half of it is made of Cacholong opal and half from the blue PVD meteorite. Moreover, the opal part of the moon and the sub dial are both filled with a blue-green super-luminova. So large parts of the watch light-up in the dark. The moon is also visible at the case back.
The Arnold & Son Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite has a power reserve of 90 hours
Inside is a manual winding Arnold & Son caliber A&S1021 which can be admired through its transparent case back. There a secondary moon display is visible providing a detailed age of the moon. The movement takes 122 years before deviating from the correct celestial reading, and it is just by one day. The power reserve is 90 hours.
The Arnold & Son Luna Magna Red Gold Meteorite comes on a blue alligator leather strap, with electric blue alligator leather lining. It is secured with a red gold folding clasp. Should you like dragons, take a look a this Arnold & Son Luna Magna Red Gold Year of the Dragon.
