The Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 38 Gold Aventurine & Grey have shrunk a little bit compared to last year’s Perptual Moon editions. Those have a diameter of 41.5 millimeters, these two new references have a diameter of 38 millimeters. And both in 18-carat red gold.
It also means the new ones have another movement than the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 41.5 Platinum Celestial Blue for instance. We’ll come back to that later.
Aventurine dial, what is it?
First, we take a look at both new dials. One is blue and made from aventurine glass, a variety of the mineral quartz. The material is characterized by its translucency and the presence of mineral inclusions that give it a shimmering or glistening effect known as “aventurescence”.
The aventurine is a great material to depict starry skies on watches. Examples? This Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium Dunes of Mars or this Montblanc Heritage Chronométrie ExoTourbillon.
Large moon phase
The dial of the second model is executed in sunray-brushed cliff grey. And both models feature a large moon phase almost taking up the upper half of the dial. The sky of the moon phase is blue aventurine glass for the blue version, or grained midnight blue PVD for the cliff grey version.
The moon itself is from mother-of-pearl overlaid with super-luminova and hand-painted details. The constellations, Cassiopeia and Ursa Major, are also overlaid with super-luminova, and also have hand-painted details.
The Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 38 Gold Aventurine & Grey has a power reserve of 90 hours
The movement of the Arnold & Son Perpetual Moon 38 Gold Aventurine & Grey is the Arnold & Son caliber A&S1612. It’s a smaller caliber than the earlier 41.5 Perpetual Moon versions, which have the caliber A&S1512 (29.4 mm vs 34 mm). Furthermore, it has the same specs, with a double barrel, hand-wound and a power reserve of 90 hours.
The movement can be admired through the sapphire case back. Where you can see the rhodium-plated main plate with radiating Côtes de Genève stripes, polished and chamfered bridges and circular satin-finished wheels. The screws are blued and chamfered, with polished heads.
These Perpetual Moons come on an ink blue or warm grey alligator leather strap, depending on the dial color. The pin buckle is 18-carat red gold as well, just like the case. The blue aventurine is limited to 88 pieces, the grey model to 28 pieces.
