When it comes to design, minimalist, massive concrete buildings may be brutalism but so is the Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02 Selfwinding according to the brand. Brutalism design is a raw style, geometric, bold and imposing, and in architecture it emerged in the 1950s. In this post-war era a new architectural and design movement popped-up that went from modernism to exposed, unpainted, mainly monochrome colors from basic materials.
In 1961 Audemars Piguet launched a watch, the Model 5159BA, following those brutalism characteristics. A yellow gold model, limited to 7 pieces, and part of a larger series of asymmetrical models. AP created more than 30 of those models between 1959 and 1963, most of them limited to less than 10 pieces. This new [RE]Master02 pays a tribute to that 1961 model and is in fact a perfect look-a-like, only bigger (27.5 millimeters back then, 41 millimeters now) and blue instead of grey.
The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master series
This [RE]Master02 is the second AP model that gets a modern make-over. In 2020 the brand released the [RE]Master01, the evolution of a 1943 chronograph. So don’t be surprised if more special [RE]Master models will follow. For the rectangular case of this 02, Audemars Piguet uses their new sand gold alloy. This was first presented earlier this year on the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Openworked 41 mm. It is a blend of white gold and pink gold, and due to its modest appearance, it withstands the is-this-brutalism-test easily.
Same for the dial layout which showcases twelve different triangles. Each is decorated with a linear satin finish for a remarkable geometric effect, strengthened by the beveled case and beveld sapphire and the so called “Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50” colored dial.
The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02 Selfwinding has a power reserve of 52 hours
Inside is a fresh movement, the automatic Audemars Piguet caliber 7129. It is an adjusted caliber 7121, now without date function, presented in 2022 for the Royal Oak Jumbo Extra thin models. Without date it is 2.8 millimeters thick instead of 3.2. It is highly decorated with Côtes de Genève, circular satin, snailing, sunray brushing, circular graining and polished angles, and delivers a power reserve of 52 hours.
The Audemars Piguet [RE]Master02 Selfwinding comes on a blue contrasted matt alligator strap with an 18-carat sand gold pin buckle. The watch is limited to 250 pieces.
