The story behind the Lunar Pilot is very interesting, which provides this Bulova Lunar Pilot Blood Moon some history. As on August 2, 1971, NASA’s Apollo 15 mission commander Dave Scott was wearing a Bulova on the moon. On a NASA-issued velcro strap, over his moon suite. It was his own watch.

So, no, not only Omega’s Speedmaster was on the moon, although it was the only watch officially flight certified by NASA back then. There was a Bulova too. In fact it is the only privately owned watch ever worn on the moon. A claim we cannot check.

Was there a Bulova or a Universal Genève on the moon?

Dave Scott is the seventh man to walk on the moon and the first to drive the Lunar Rover, and he was wearing a Bulova Chronograph Model 885104/01. From which some say it is actually a Universal Genève with Bulova dial. Nevertheless, the original watch from Scott was sold by RR Auctions in 2015 for a whooping 1,592,500 dollars.

The design of that watch comes back in this new Blood Moon model. A Blood Moon is the moment the Earth passes in between the moon and the sun and cuts off the sunlight, causing an eclipse. When it is full moon at that point the moon will color red-ish, and that’s what they call a Blood Moon. It has no astronomical significance but if you want to see one, the next will occur on March 13/14, 2025.

The Bulova Lunar Pilot Blood Moon is driven by a so called high precession quartz

Inside this 43.5-millimeter stainless steel watch is a Bulova caliber NP20, a high precision quartz that can measure times up to 1/20th of a seconds. Shown on the sub dial 3 o’clock. The small seconds are at 6 and there is a 60-minutes totalizer at 9.

The Bulova Lunar Pilot Blood Moon comes on a stainless steel bracelet however you will also get a black leather NATO strap as well. And if you don’t like red, check this Bulova Lunar Pilot Meteorite. Yes, it has a dial from meteorite, the same specs, but it’s “limited” to 5,000 pieces.
