With the Casio Edifice TOM’s 50th Anniversary Edition the Japanese brand shows its love for car racing. As this watch is a tribute to the TOM’S KP47 Starlet, a race car made from a dull 1970s sub compact car from Toyota, codes as the KP47. Which, talking about the road car, is the coupe version of a Toyota Starlet with a 1,166 cc engine. The model never came to Europe by the way. But if you put a wide body on a coupe like this, with an explosive engine and some fancy colors – in short – you’ll get a genuine race car.
It’s about exactly what TOM’s did, an aftermarket parts manufacturer and tuner for Toyota’s established in Tokyo, Japan, in 1974. So, the watch also celebrates 50 years of TOM’s. And not only for parts and tuning but they are also very active in car racing. Backed by Toyota, and until this day they are very successful in multiple race series. The name stands for Tachi Oiwa Motor Sport, as the founders are Nobuhide Tachi and Kiyoshi Oiwa.
Iconic race car translated to a watch
The color scheme of the Edifice TOM’s 50th Anniversary Edition echoes TOM’S KP47 Starlet from 1973. It’s the car that started the company, powered by a 1.3-liter four cylinder with about 295 HP at 11,000 rpm. Your ears will remember it forever whenever you can hear it. The car is executed in white with yellow, orange, red and black accents, and has special parts of course. Grille, wheels, engine, body, spoilers and more.
Lots of these details come back on the watch, with a honeycomb-shaped dial and purple hue, a nod to the engines cover. Two sub dials look like the TOM’S Igeta wheels, the accent colors around the dial and sub dials are the same as the car. Furthermore, the car’s racing number 36 is glass-printed on the dial side at the 36-minute mark. Although the one on the photos has number 7.
Fully charged the Casio Edifice TOM’s 50th Anniversary Edition runs for 5 months
For their movements Casio has a wide variety of solar powered quartz calibers with different functions and connections. Here it is the Casio caliber 5530 with a chronograph, 24-hour hand (at 12 o’clock), date and battery charge warning function. Fully loaded it works for around 5 months.
The Casio Edifice TOM’s 50th Anniversary Edition comes on a black leather strap. Which has the old TOM’S logo in green and a green band edge. The case is from carbon reinforced resin with stainless steel, and measures 50.1 x 44.5 millimeters. Like Honda’s more than Toyota’s?
