At the Premium Watch Fair in Nagoya, Japan, another limited edition by Christiaan van der Klaauw was revealed, this time the Planetarium Nagoya Edition. Just a couple of days after the launch of this oil-painted Christiaan van der Klaauw Grand Planetarium Eccentric Sincere Platinum Jubilee Edition. That model is limited to 3 pieces and features a large planetarium on which the eccentric movement of planets can be seen. This Nagoya Edition is limited to 6 pieces and has the brand’s “regular” planetarium.
The difference between the Nagoya and earlier released models, like these Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium models with sunray or aventurine dials or this Dunes of Mars edition is the dial. As it is based on the planetarium at the Nagoya City Science Museum, which is one of the largest in the world.
Nagoya planetarium dome on the dial
The planetarium of the Nagoya City Science Museum has a huge dome to bear the planetarium, and that dome is copied to the dial of the timepiece. This spherical dome, a symbol of the museum, is hand-engraved on the dial and blends with the hands and Roman numerals.
At 12 o’clock is the calendar sub dial with the date and month, and at the 6 o’clock position is the technical highlight. The world’s smallest mechanical planetarium. The sun is static, in the middle, and Earth plus the five closest planets orbit around it. In real time. Thus, Saturn turns every 29.46 years around the sun, also on this watch.
The Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium Nagoya Edition has a power reserve of 96 hours
Inside the Christiaan van der Klaauw Planetarium Nagoya Edition is the Christiaan van der Klaauw caliber CVDK7386. It is a Soprod-based automatic with a module by Christiaan van der Klaauw. Beautifully finished with stars, and a gold rotor with their logo, a sun with 12 claws. As “Klaauw” is Dutch for “claw”.
The 40-millimeter stainless steel case offers a sapphire case back with the words “NAGOYA CITY SCIENCE MUSEUM” engraved. The watch is priced at 12,100,000 Japanese yen, roughly 70 to 80k in dollars or euros.
