To celebrate their 140th anniversary Edox launches a reissue of their 1970s sports watch with the Edox Sportsman Chronographe Automatic. The original Sportsman Chronographe was released in 1972. Although we found an example from 1969 – which is probably not dated correctly. This original 1972 Sportsman has a manual winding Valjoux caliber 7733, a bi-compax chronograph, during that time used by several brands.

The 1972 model measures 37 x 40 millimeters, the new one has grown a bit. And you can find the old ones in several colors, with and without tachymeter scale. Prices for this vintage Sportsman Chronographe bounce between 400 and 700 euro’s or dollars for a piece in acceptable condition.

Edox and BMW M Motorsport

The new Sportsman measures 41 millimeters and comes either with a blue or grey dial. Both have a subtle reference to Edox’ partner BMW M Motorsport in the right sub dial. This 30-minute totalizer of the chronograph has touches of the BMW M Motorsport colors. On the left there are the small seconds on a retro sub dial and the chronograph seconds counter is shown by the orange-red central hand. All large hands and indexes are coated with super-luminova.

The tachymeter scale is on the inner bezel, just like the depicted 1972 model. The dial has a sunburst-like pattern which makes the grey one looks a bit brown on the photos. So, the dial can have different color shades under different light angles.

The Edox Sportsman Chronographe Automatic has a power reserve of 62 hours

Inside the new Sportsman ticks the Edox caliber 082, which is an automatic Sellita caliber SW510 BH b. It is likely that only the rotor is adjusted by Edox, as the Edox’ anniversary logo is engraved on it. According to Sellita’s specs is has a power reserve of about 62 hours.

Both the blue and the grey version come on a stainless steel mesh bracelet with folding clasp. And both have an additional brown leather race strap. The watch is limited to 600 pieces.
