The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Eternity Special Edition ELA is a special, one-off timepiece to be auctioned on 11 November 2024. Christie’s will host an auction at the Four Seasons Hotel in Geneva where an array of watches will be sold in support of ELA. That is the European Leukodystrophies Association, a charity dedicated to fighting leukodystrophies in children. This watch is limited to one piece and stands out from other Laureato models by its special dial. It is made by the Swiss company Donzé Cadrans, which specializes in enamel dials. The company is part of the Sowind Group, to which GP also belongs, just as Ulysse Nardin.

Purple grand feu enamel dial

As you can see the dial is very purple. It is a grand feu enamel dial in purple with a guilloché décor. This guilloché motif is made of concentric rings that emanate from the center in a sunray pattern. Then the dial is layered with a violet grand feu enamel, a mixture of silica, minium, potash, and soda. This mix results in a paste that is blended with metal oxides to create a powder that is dusted to the dial.

Only then does the delicate process start, as the powder is baked onto the dial in an oven at 800°C. When it reaches the desired shade, it is removed and cooled down, and then the process starts again—about 5 to 10 times to make a solid ‘crust’. When it is finished, it will never fade and keep its color for eternity. Now you get a part of the watch’s name.
