The Hanhart Preventor HD12 offers something every watch lover who wears stainless steel wants. More scratch resistance. Regular stainless steel watches come with 316L stainless steel, which has a hardness of about 150-200 HV (Hardness Vickers). Read our article about the differences in stainless steel.
Rolex offers a harder variant, 904L, with a Vickers rate of 200-250 HV. But it still scratches easily, especially when you’re a bit clumsy. Anyway, Hanhart has worked for two years on a new stainless steel called HD12. Which offers a Vickers hardness up to 1200 HV.
What is HD12 stainless steel?
To get HD12 stainless steel a huge amount of carbon is diffused into stainless steel in a surface hardening process. Which provides a gradual transition from the hard outside to the soft core. This offers an advantage over coating, and prevents brittleness. After this process a transparent hard coating (PVD) is applied to the mixed steel for even more protection.
The result can be brushed, matt and glossy, and it’s extremely hard, with 1200 HV. We’re not chemists so we cannot say whether the results are really 5 to 6 times harder than 904L stainless steel. But when you have a HD12 watch, please let us know your scratchy experiences in the comments below.
The Hanhart Preventor HD12 has a power reserve of 38 hours
The design of the dial is basic, and attractive at the same time. No glamour, just a clear three-hander with flamboyant red tip on the seconds hand. Available with a matt black or dark blue dial. The hands and numerals are coated with white super-luminova grade C1.
Inside the Hanhart Preventor HD12 runs the automatic Sellita caliber SW200-1 b, a no-date version of the SW200. Sellita communicates a power reserve of about 41 hours for this movement, Hanhart indicates 38 hours. This caliber is based on the base ETA caliber 2824, we’ve written some background information about the Sellita caliber SW200 in general.
The Preventor either comes on a leather strap (brown, dark brown or black) or a stainless steel bracelet (+200).
