This Hautlence Retrovision ‘47 is a “What if?” watch to commemorate the brand’s 20th anniversary. And the “What if?” is: what would a watch of Hautlence look like if they had existed in the 1940s. Which is kind of an odd question given the fact that the whole world was on fire in the 1940s due to the Second World War. Anyway, the idea of making or converting an object from ages ago into a watch is fun.
You might have the idea to look at an old TV, but in fact it is a radio broadcast receiver. From the General Television & Radio Corp. Chicago, to be specific, and their Model 5A5 to be even more specific. A portable box executed in marbled green and white Bakelite, with a speaker on the front and two buttons and an analogue frequency display.
A retro Jade green marbled swirl radio
When the General Television & Radio Corp. Chicago launched this table radio in 1947, it was already retro. As the design was taken from the first TV’s that were launched, and radios at the time already looked a bit more modern. So, now you get the name of the Hautlance Retrovision ’47 a bit.
The cool thing is that this watch is a very good copy of the old radio. The color, the marble, the square design with rounded corners, even the handgrip is there. Under the speaker grill is a tourbillon – a bit hidden. And the frequency display now shows the time, on a display with embossed Hautlence Möbius emblem. The case measures 39.2 x 44.4 millimeters and is from titanium with a hand-painted shell.
The Hautlence Retrovision ‘47 has a power reserve of 72 hours
In the heart of this watch is the automatic Hautlence caliber D20 with double hairspring flying tourbillon. A part of the movement is visible through the engraved sapphire back and the power reserve is 72 hours.
The Hautlence Retrovision ’47 comes on a red calf leather strap with a steel buckle. The model is limited to 10 pieces according to the Hautlence website, the press release also mentions 20 pieces. Which makes sense if you just turned 20 years old.
