When a Swiss watchmaker, a Swiss embroidery company and a Swiss ski manufacturer unite this is what you get: the Hublot Big Bang Sugar Skull Blue Cobalt. And the Hublot Big Bang Sugar Skull Hot Pink as well, which is more for ladies we think. Swiss craftsmanship and art, related to the mountains and winter sports. That’s what this collaboration is more or less about, according to Hublot.
So, Hublot created a new Big Bang Sugar Skull with a Mexican skull theme, a theme Hublot uses on more time pieces. The Mexican skull (calavera in Spanish) is a skull originally made for children, from sugar or clay. To celebrate the Day of the Dead, which is comparable with All Souls’ Day. It’s a bit morbid perhaps but on the other hand it kind of conserves a rich, cultural and historic theme that has its roots in the Aztec, Mayan, and Toltec culture. Later the calaveras became artistic representations of skulls, with lots of decorations, just what Hublot is doing. You might like that, but it’s not really related to either Switzerland or mountains or winter sports.
The Hublot Big Bang Sugar Skull Blue Cobalt has a pink sister and seems to come with a pair of skis
Back to the partnership between these three Swiss specialists. The company Bischoff is specialized in embroidery. Their techniques are used on the dial of other Hublot models as well, including the new Hot Pink version. It is a combination of carbon fiber and multicolored embroidery. Very Hublot-ish, as using unusual materials is how Hublot distinguishes themselves from other brands. Concrete, anyone? And then there is AK Ski, the first ski manufacturer to use rubber on its skis. In fact it’s called elastac, a cutting-edge, rubber-based material which enables stable and smooth running of skis. AK Ski produced a pair of gorgeous skis for each watch and it seems these are part of the package. Which would be great.
The Hublot Big Bang Sugar Skull Blue Cobalt and the Hot Pink are both limited to 50 pieces. The price of the 41-millimeter Hot Pink version (ref. 343.CS.6590.NR.AKS16) with 12 black diamond indexes is 19,900 Swiss Francs. Which is about 19,500 US dollars or 17.900 Euro’s. It has another movement (caliber HUB1100), but your partner will love it as a gift anyway. We hope.
