French chemist Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil invented synthetic sapphires with color in 1902. So that’s nothing new, but it is on this scale with the new Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire in red or blue sapphire.
Why it’s so special? For a long time the making of the crystals, uniformly was an unpredictable and unstable thing to do. Especially on a large scale.
Hublot is not one to go out of the way of a challenge, just look at a couple of their watches we featured recently. For this colored effect, they came up with a new process to create uniform transparent sapphires. By melting iron with aluminum oxide at a temperature of between 2,000 and 2,050 degrees Celsius this is what happens.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire is also available in an uncolored version
The pretty spectacular result, even if it’s not your taste, can be seen in the Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire. The entire watch – bezel, middle and case back – is cut out of a single piece of sapphire.
Through the sapphire you can see the mechanism of the Unico HUB1242 in-house movement and its column wheel on the dial side. The best view on the movement you get at the dial side, which is open-worked.
The Hublot Big Bang Unico Sapphire in either blue or red sapphire is limited to 250 pieces. Hublot’s slogan is ‘The Art of Fusion’ and we must admit: for a marketing slogan it’s quite true for a change.
