You would almost forget in between all the Portugieser’s and Pilot’s watches, but IWC also makes a mean diving watch. Even one with some Porsche heritage: the IWC Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition 35 Years Ocean 2000.

IWC launched the first Aquatimer in 1967 with reference 812AD. It features an internal rotating ring to set by a second crown in order to monitor dive time. It is water-resistant to 200 meters / 660 feet.

In 1982 Ferdinand A. Porsche designed the IWC Aquatimer Ocean 2000, with reference 3500. A modern design and ahead of its time with an extremely water-resistance of 2,000 meters or 6,600 feet. For the 35th birthday of this legend IWC introduces the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition 35 Years Ocean 2000.

The new design pays enough homage to the original Ocean 2000 design, with bits of the Ref. 812AD as well. But without copying them. The recessed grips on the rotating bezel and the lamellar-style rubber strap pay tribute to the Porsche original from 1982. It is also the thinnest IWC diving watch at the moment with a height of just 14.5 millimeters.

An interesting feature is the bezel. The bezel is used for timing purposes, but also to make sure a diver doesn’t resurface too quickly when diving with compressed air. On the Aquatimer watches from IWC, the dive time can be set using the rotating bezel for extra safety. The innovative SafeDive system ensures that the bezel can only be adjusted by turning it anticlockwise. So even if the bezel is accidentally moved, zero hour – the time at which the diver can return to the surface without the need for decompression stops – is never exceeded.

The IWC Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition 35 Years Ocean 2000 is limited to 350 pieces.
