Once in a while you need to change your design to fulfill the current needs of customers, which is probably the reason why IWC brings back the round case for the Da Vinci collection. The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is inspired by the 1985 Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Ref. 3750. It was a model that, amongst others, showed the world mechanical watches were not killed by quartz.
In 2007 IWC introduced a new Da Vinci collection with tonneau-shaped cases but let’s be honest; they already looked rather old-fashioned then. And now. So bringing back the round case is a good idea, we think.
The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is inspired by the IWC Ref. 3750 from 1985
The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph houses a new movement: IWC’s caliber 89630. Which is based on the caliber 89360. The new 89630 combines the complications for a double chronograph counter and perpetual calendar, where the moon phase and stopped times are displayed in one sub-dial at 12. It results in a small moon phase display with a silver-plated or gold-plated moon disk and a dark blue colored sub-dial with sprinkled white gold particles surrounding it. An attractive contrast with the silver-plated or slate grey colored dial. And although the moon phase display is small, the accuracy is quite high: adjustment of one day is needed after 577.5 years.
Another great feature is the indication of the year in a small aperture at the 8 o’clock position. Like all perpetual calendars it is able to account for leap years as well as the difference in numbers of the days between months. The case size measures 43 millimeters in diameter but the lugs are movable giving it some extra comfort for wearers with a smaller wrist.
There are two versions of the IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph. One in red gold with silver-plated dial and a stainless steel version with slate grey dial. Both come with a matching strap made by the Italian shoemaker Santoni.
