Mercedes’ in-house tuner AMG celebrates its 50th birthday this year. IWC – that has partnered with AMG since 2004 – honors this major touchstone with a limited edition watch. This is the IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG.
The IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG (yes, watch brands have a liking for overly long names) is a chronograph with a titanium case and a soft iron inner-case. The dial with tachymeter scale is silver-plated. The chronograph is driven by the IWC manufactured 89361 caliber with flyback function.

Like the first Ingenieur from 1955 the case protects against one of the major enemies of any mechanical watch: magnetism. The Ingenieur began because of an increasing number of technical appliances generated magnetic fields that adversely affected the accuracy of wristwatches. Engineers in particular often worked in areas subjected to magnetic fields. By this time, IWC had perfected methods of protecting against magnetic fields to the point that making a new watch line especially for this profession seemed like a good idea. And so the Ingenieur was born.
Nice detail with this IWC Ingenieur Chronograph Sport Edition 50th Anniversary of Mercedes-AMG: the inner-case is designed as brake disc. This is visible through the open case back. The engraving ‘A tribute to one man, one engine’ is a reminder that the performance components from Mercedes-AMG are assembled from the bottom up in the engine manufacturing department by a single mechanic. It’s all in the details.
