The IWC Portugieser Chronograph 2024 is all about new dials. IWC has created a new process to color their dials which makes them more bright, with deeper colors and richer hues. We have already seen these colors on the 2024 IWC Portugieser Automatic 42 mm Double Box-glass, and now they are available for the chronograph as well.
The dial design is still in line with the Portugieser Chronograph tradition, with a vertical arrangement of the sub-dials. On top a 30-minutes totalizer, and small seconds at the 6 o’clock position. On the inner flange there is a printed quarter-second scale for precise measuring of times.
New dial colors for the Portugieser Chronograph
The three new dial colors are Dune, Obsidian and Horizon Blue. The first is a sand tone and paired with a stainless steel case. Obsidian is a deep black, coming from glass that forms from viscous lava, here paired with a red gold case. Lastly there is a Horizon blue dial, a light blue hue, paired with a white gold case.
The base of the dial is a brass plate that gets a sunburst finish. Then the color is applied after which the dial is treated with 15 layers of transparent lacquer. A polish process adds a high gloss finish. The sub dials are milled into both the brass base and the lacquer layer creating a 3D effect. Which is also strengthened by the depth-adding printing procedure of the numerals. The final stage of the process are the hand-mounted appliques.
The IWC Portugieser Chronograph 2024 with Dune, Obsidian or Horizon Blue dial has a power reserve of 46 hours
These new Portugiesers run on the automatic IWC caliber 69355 with a column wheel chronograph. The movement can be admired through the sapphire case back and it provides a power reserve of 46 hours.
The IWC Portugieser Chronograph 2024 comes on different strap. The Dune version has a black alligator leather strap with a stainless steel butterfly clasp. The Obsidian and Horizon Blue dial get a color matching leather strap by Santoni and a pin buckle from the same material as the case.
