Still based on the 1959 Longines Diver ref. 7042 the new Longines Legends Diver is now available in green, terracotta or anthracite grey. So, three new references, all on a bracelet. But let’s look at its heritage quickly.
The reference 7042 from 1959 has a super-compressor case. A type of case not relying solely on gaskets or sealing mechanisms to keep water out. A super-compressor case is engineered to actually become more watertight as the external water pressure increases. As the watch descends into deeper water, the increased external pressure presses down on the case back, tightening the seal and enhancing water resistance.
Double crown, one for the internal bezel
Today the way of manufacturing has improved making the super-compressor case more or less redundant. Precise parts, rubbers, seals and more can provide a serious waterproofness nowadays, meeting the ISO 6425 standard for diving watches. However, Longines kept the design of the vintage super-compressor for their latest Legend Diver in 42 millimeters and 39 millimeters.
The latter was released in 2023 in black or blue, with a leather or NATO strap or a bracelet. The three new references come on a stainless steel bracelet with grains-of-rice middle part. It is closed with double-safety folding clasp and pusher-operated opening system. The micro-adjustment of the bracelet makes it easy to adjust it perfectly to the size of your wrist.
The Longines Legends Diver in Green, Terracotta or Grey has a power reserve of 72 hours
This movement of this Legends Diver is the Longines caliber L888.6, a COSC certified automatic with a power reserve of 72 hours. Highly anti-magnetic due to the silicon balance-spring. The water resistance is 300 meters / 990 feet and the screw-down case back has an orientation system of the diver symbol stamped on the case back.
The internal bidirectional rotating bezel can be adjusted with the crown at the 2 o’clock position, the crown at 4 is for adjusting the time. Should you rather like the original ref. 7042, you can find decent ones between 5 to 10k. A fully serviced and revised one by the Longines Heritage workshop does 15k.
