Les Ateliers Louis Moinet has introduced a new timepiece named the Fuego Nuevo for the 2024 SIAR in Mexico. The Salón Internacional Alta Relojería México held from October 15 to 17. This watch honors the ancient Aztec ritual of the New Fire, a ceremony that symbolized the rebirth of the sun and the renewal of cosmic cycles. The timepiece’s design references the iconic Piedra del Sol, or Sun Stone, a crucial element of Aztec culture.
The Fuego Nuevo is crafted from the Muonionalusta meteorite, estimated to be 4.5 billion years old. This material is engraved with intricate patterns that echo the Sun Stone’s symbolism. The dial’s decoration, created through advanced laser engraving, required immense precision, involving 9,800 lines of sketches to accurately represent Aztec cosmogony.
Case from gold and titanium
The case of the Fuego Nuevo for SIAR is constructed from 18k red gold, with an inner case of grade 5 titanium. The exterior measures 40.7 millimeters, providing a balanced structure for the intricate dial.
The domed sapphire crystal enhances the visibility of the engraved meteorite dial, showcasing the fine details and three-dimensional structure. It is laser engraved at two depths – 0.2 and 0.1 millimeters – allowing for a detailed and textured display. And it has an aventurine backdrop for a starry night effect.
This dial and materials reflect the importance of the Sun Stone, a basaltic sculpture representing the Aztec view of time cycles. The original Sun Stone, created during the reign of Emperor Axayacatl, measures 3.6 meters in diameter and weighs 24 tons. Today, it remains a centerpiece of the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
The Louis Moinet Fuego Nuevo for SIAR has a power reserve of 96 hours
The Fuego Nuevo features the LM135 caliber, designed by Louis Moinet in collaboration with Concepto. This hand-wound movement includes a flying tourbillon with an off-center cage at 6 o’clock. The design highlights the symbolic nature of time’s continuous renewal, a theme closely tied to the New Fire ceremony.
The tourbillon mechanism uses a double barrel, a design known as “volte face.” This arrangement allows the barrels to discharge simultaneously, providing a power reserve of 96 hours.
The watch comes on a leather strap, it is a unique piece, and the price is on request. If you like meteorite dials, take a look at Louis Moinet’s Starman. It has two different pieces of meteorite on its dial.
