The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon, and the other colors as well, is one of the best looking chronographs on the market below 500. Yes, it’s a quartz, partly, as it has a mechanical chronograph complication. And yes, it’s a cheap quartz, but hey, there are automatic chronographs on the market for 10k with a 240 dollar movement. So, we think this Mecaquartz is a good deal.
It’s executed in 316L stainless steel, 38 millimeters, with a unidirectional black aluminum bezel and has a nice domed sapphire crystal. It wears a bit small, maybe because it is quite thick. We like the black dial on the Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Aviator Sea Diver Meca-quartz, and the orange Paul Newman color scheme is cool too. But this glowing salmon hue looks great as well, adding a touch of extra vintage-ness to the whole watch.

The quartz movement inside is a Seiko caliber VK63A, also called VK63. Nivada Grenchen now speaks about a TMI VK63A, earlier they called it a Seiko VK63. TMI (Time Module, Inc.) is a Hong Kong based movement maker and part of the Seiko Group Corporation. So, these movements just get a name, maybe from the factory / business unit who produces them. Anyway, you can buy the VK63A on AliExpress for about 20 dollars. And it’s still a good movement, given the price.
This Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon is available with a lot of different rubber and leather straps and different bracelet models. The latter ads about 200 to the price. All these options give you the possibly to compose your favorite layout.
