The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Paul Newman Orange Valjoux 23 VZ is a follow-up of the hybrid mecaquartz version the brand released last year. This Nivada Grenchen Chronoking “Paul Newman” Orange with a price tag below 500 was sold-out quickly, it might happen with this new one too. Despite a price tag that is 10 times higher.

This has to do with the movement. Nivada Grenchen uses some (well, 15) new old stock Valjoux 23 VZ chronograph calibers for their new model. These have been reconditioned and tested which will give you a vintage but new movement in a new watch. And it’s not just a Valjoux movement, but a model that has been in production for 58 years. Between 1916 and 1974 Valjoux produced about 125,000 of this hand-wound VZ calibers (“Valjoux Zähler” meaning “Valjoux Chronograph”). And it was used by brands like Breitling, Certina, Enicar, Favre-Leuba, Girard-Perregaux, Heuer, Patek Philippe, Tissot and Ulysse Nardin.

The new Chronoking comes in a 38-millimeter stainless steel case with a unidirectional aluminum bezel. It displays a black dial with two sub-counters in light orange, which is the Paul Newman style of the watch. The dial has applied indexes and hands filled with super-luminova. The seconds track is executed in orange and around that is a tiny black tachymeter scale. And it somehow is an evolution of the brand’s first Chronoking unveiled in 1970.

The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Paul Newman Orange Valjoux 23 VZ is available with different straps and bracelets. From rubber and leather to about five different stainless steel bracelets.
