Nivada Grenchen’s Depthmaster Big Blue brings a classic back to life, tailored for divers and enthusiasts. First launched in 1965, the Depthmaster established itself as a pioneering diver’s watch with a water resistance of 1,000 meters, a feat not achieved by many in its era. Known by collectors as the “Pac-Man” for its distinctive indices at 6 and 9 o’clock, the Depthmaster has become a symbol in dive watch history.
The Depthmaster collection, revived in 2018 under Guillaume Laidet, builds on this legacy with a variety of dial designs that retain the original’s functional aesthetics. Not only the Depthmaster by the way, as it looks like there’s a new Nivada Grenchen model every week.
Midnight blue dial in 39 millimeters
The newest Depthmaster diver is the Big Blue, and sports a midnight blue dial with a classic cushion-shaped case. This features a 39-millimeter diameter with a thickness of 13 millimeters, making it wearable for both deep-sea and daily use. Constructed from 316L stainless steel, the Depthmaster Big Blue is built to withstand challenging underwater environments.
Its unidirectional blue ceramic bezel, marked with a 15-minute scale, ensures accurate tracking of dive times, while the screw-down crown and case back further protect the movement from water ingress. The dial’s square and rectangular indices, coated in super-luminova, offer visibility in low-light conditions, and a triangular marker at 12 o’clock aids quick orientation.
The Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Big Blue has a power reserve of 38 hours
The Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Big Blue is powered by the Soprod caliber P024, an automatic winding movement. This movement provides a power reserve of 38 hours. The caliber P024 has been a mainstay in robust timepieces, noted for its precision and consistency under pressure.
The addition of a helium escape valve reinforces its utility for saturation dives, preventing internal pressure build-up during decompression. Diving is possible up to depths of 1,000 meters / 3,300 feet.
Pricing of the Depthmaster Big Blue
Paired with a black Tropic rubber strap, the Depthmaster Big Blue ensures comfort and durability underwater. The rubber material resists wear from salt water, while the textured design enhances grip on the wrist.
This model is priced under a thousand and therefore offers a solid alternative to other well-known divers in this price category.
