The Nomos Glashuette Aqua Ahoi Datum comes in three versions. A basic model with white silver-plated dial, the Atlantik with a dark blue dial and the Signalblua with a siren blue dial. Strangly enough the basic version has another, older movement than the other two.

Inside the Nomos Glashuette Aqua Ahoi Datum with reference 551, with silver-plated dial, is the Nomos Zeta caliber. Presented in 2006 as the first in-house built automatic with date. The date wheel is mounted outside the movement rather than stacked between the bottom plate and the dial, which keeps the movement as thin as possible.

Go for the Nomos Glashuette Aqua Ahoi Datum with the newest movement

The references 553 with dark blue dial and 554 with siren blue dial have the Nomos caliber DUW 5101. It is a new movement, built in-house, but it does not differ that much from the Zeta caliber. The DUW 5101 is redesigned and has a new swing system escapement and blued hairspring. And a higher level of finishing. There are more minor changes, and as it is newer it is more refined. So, we would go for the ones with DUW 5101 movement as it is probably better, somehow. Otherwise it wouldn’t have replaced the Zeta.

Apart from the movement, the dark blue and siren blue Nomos Glashuette Aqua Ahoi Datum models are much more appealing than the one with silver-plated dial. Although it’s a matter of taste. All three are not afraid of water with a water-resistance of 200 meters / 660 feet. Fine for a dive, but not really for pro’s as there is no unidirectional bezel which can be set to elapsed time underwater. However, some serious swimming or snorkeling is no problem. The super-luminova indexes and hands will tell you the time.
