A huge tool watch for sailors is the Omega Seamaster Regatta 37th America’s Cup, a quartz with more than two hands full of functions at a 7 to 8k price range. It has a grey LCD display for all of its functions and three analogue hands. These hands, inspired by the Diver 300M, can be “switched off” in order to increase the legibility of the digital readouts.

The case is 46.75 millimeters and from grade 5 titanium with a polished blue ceramic bidirectional bezel. Not for diving, as this watch has a water resistance of 50 meters / 165 feet, just good enough for some easy swimming. At the flange of the dial is a white minute track with integrated luminescent hour markers.

Regatta timer and digital moon phase

All functions apart from showing the time are a 24 hour indication / GMT, 3 alarms, a chronograph, of course with regatta timing. Furthermore, a perpetual calendar and a cool digital moon phase shown in the aperture at 3 o’clock. Then you have a battery end of life indication, a sailing logbook, temperature gauge and an accelerometer.

To operate all those functions there are 4 pushers and a crown which is also a pusher and can be turned to operate even more functions. Don’t be surprised if you have to spend more than an hour to read the manual.

The Omega Seamaster Regatta 37th America’s Cup has a battery life of 30 months

The movement of the Omega Seamaster Regatta 37th America’s Cup is the new Omega caliber 5701. This is a thermo‑compensated quartz with inertial sensor unit and brightness sensor. It has a satin‑finish rhodium plated battery cover with red engraving for some extra shine and the battery lasts about 30 months.

The back of the watch is from titanium, screwed, and with a “Helmholtz resonance” wave pattern. This principle creates a resonating cavity which is useful for the watch’ alarm functions. The case back is raised and embossed with logos and engravings about the Cup, the watch and the movement.

This Seamaster comes with a 5-year warranty on a blue rubber strap with titanium fold over clasp. Expensive, or even over-priced for a quartz? Sure, even though it’s a high-end quartz. But if you’re an American’s Cup sailor this is all you want on your wrist.
