A new addition to the Speedmaster collection is the Omega Speedmaster Pilot, designed to cater to professional pilots and aviation enthusiasts. With functionality and readability at its core, this watch continues Omega’s commitment to precision timekeeping in the demanding field of aviation. Its design and features should ensure reliable performance during flights.
Omega’s association with aviation expanded during World War II, supplying the British Ministry of Defence with watches for pilots and navy personnel. The Speedmaster collection dates back to 1957 when Omega launched the first model that also became known as the “pilots’ choice”. This early design was embraced by U.S. Air Force pilots for its robustness and ease of use. Over the years, the Speedmaster evolved, and apart from being the first watch on the moon, it became a symbol of precision for both military and civilian aviators.
Grained matt black dial
The Speedmaster Pilot features a case measuring 40.85 millimeters in diameter, crafted from stainless steel with a matte finish to minimize light reflections. The bezel includes a matte aluminum ring. It preserves the heritage look with its “Dot Over Ninety” and “Diagonal to Seventy” markings on the tachymeter scale. Nods to earlier Speedmasters.
Its grained matt black dial is designed for legibility. Large white super-luminova coated hour markers and PVD-coated matt black hands ensure visibility during nighttime flights. The central chronograph hand, tipped with an orange airplane design, adds an aviation-themed touch.
Special sub dials for the Speedmaster Pilot
This Speedmaster Pilot includes two sub dials. A 60-minute and 12-hour recorder at 3 o’clock, featuring a triangular orange hand and cockpit-inspired design with a “burn rate” indicator.
At the 9 o’clock position is a small seconds display, enhanced with a blue artificial horizon aesthetic and a yellow hand. At the bottom of the dial is a quite large date aperture.

Omega’s caliber 9900 Inside
Inside the Speedmaster Pilot Steel on Steel is the co-axial master chronometer caliber 9900, certified by METAS for accuracy, performance, and magnetic resistance. This movement exemplifies Omega’s engineering excellence. Its 60-hour power reserve ensures consistent performance, crucial for pilots requiring reliability. The movement’s decoration, including its intricate finishing, adds to its prestige. However, it is not visible as the case back is closed.
The watch has a stainless steel bracelet that incorporates Omega’s patented comfort release adjustment system, providing an adaptable fit for various wrist sizes. Additionally, a grey NATO strap reinforced with Kevlar threads and a brushed stainless steel buckle accompanies the watch, offering durability and a sporty look.
Pricing of the Omega Speedmaster Pilot Steel on Steel
The Omega Speedmaster Pilot Steel on Steel is priced at around 9 to 10k. In its segment, the watch competes with aviation models from Breitling and IWC. While Breitling offers similar aviation-focused features, the Speedmaster Pilot stands out for its unique sub dial design and a METAS certified movement.
Similarly, the IWC models provide strong competition but also lack some of the Speedmaster’s advanced chronometer standards.
