This 44-millimeter acciaio (Italian for steel) model houses Panerai’s caliber P.5000, a hand-wound mechanical movement with two barrels. The steel Panerai uses is a low-carbon variant of AISI 316 steel, which is a specification of the American Iron and Steel Institute. It is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with a chromium content of 16–18%, 11–14% nickel and 2–3% molybdenum. This type of alloy has improved welding qualities which probably improves the watch itself.
