With the Patek Philippe Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day and Moon Phases Ref. 5822P-001, the famous brand launches a whole new series. It’s named the “Cubitus”, Latin for “elbow” or “forearm”. Although you wear it probably close to that part of your body, we don’t see a connection. Other than that, it is a good name that can be adopted internationally.

For now, the brand releases two models: this reference 5822P, where the “P” means platinum, with complications, and the reference 5821 in steel (/1A) and a two-tone steel/gold (/1AR). Both three handers with a date. And they all bear the signature design of a square case. It is a bit in the style of the Aquanaut and the Nautilus, which are square-ish, with a bold bezel.

The complications of the Cubitus Ref. 5822P

The Ref. 5822P we are looking at now sports hours, minutes, and small seconds between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions. Furthermore, at 12 o’clock is a big date, here with two apertures each with its own date disc behind it. Lastly, the day of the week, indicated by hand, and the moon phase are roughly between 6 and 8 o’clock.

Which looks a bit unaligned. Especially as it crosses the virtual line from the center ax to 6 o’clock, kind of pushing the small seconds in the right corner. Somehow the Grande Date at noon brings back a part of the balance.

Dial and hands of the Cubitus

The dial is sparkling blue, with a sunburst finish and horizontal embossing. The baton-style and rounded hour and minute hands are of white gold and have white super-luminova. The small hands for the day and seconds are white painted white gold and the baton-style applied hour markers are also white gold with white super-luminova.

The Patek Philippe Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day and Moon Phases Ref. 5822P-001 has a power reserve of 38 to 48 hours

Inside this Cubitus runs the new Patek Philippe caliber 240 PS CI J LU which is based on their ultra-thin self-winding 240 caliber. An automatic which can be found in this Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse Ref. 5738 for instance. It bears the Patek Philippe seal, to ensure its quality, has a great finish all over, and a 22k gold micro-rotor. The power reserve is 38 to 48 hours, so it needs a winder if you don’t want to adjust the moon phase all the time.

This Patek Philippe Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day and Moon Phases Ref. 5822P-001 comes on a fabric-looking composite strap in navy blue with cream-colored stitches. It has a platinum so-called Cubitus fold-over clasp. Patek Philippe makes 72,000 watches per year and is not going to raise their production, thus other models will become even more difficult to buy. Same for this model, despite its price tag in the 70 to 90k range.
