The Patek Philippe Cubitus Ref. 5821 is the second model of the brand new model line from the Swiss brand. It is very recognizable by the slightly rounded square case and looks like an edgy mix of the Nautilus and the Aquanaut. And it is a daring step in the model line-up from the brand. When did you last see a completely new model line with square cases?

Currently the brand releases this Ref. 5821 in two versions. Firstly the Ref. 5821/1A-001 in stainless steel with an olive green dial. And second, the Ref. 5821/1AR-001 with a combination of stainless steel and rose gold, paired with a blue dial. Both dials have a sunburst finish and embossed horizontal lines. Very Nautilus-like.

White or rose gold hands for the Cubitus

The baton-style hands are rounded and match the color of the bezel. So, white gold hands for the stainless steel version, and rose gold hands for the steel/gold version. The hour and minute hands have white super-luminova glowing green in the dark.

Where the hands are rounded, the indexes, also baton-style, are not. Which feels a bit uneasy. The date aperture at the 3 o’clock position is square on the outside; the inside is rounded. And there is a subtle dotted minute track on the flange of the dial. Little details, undoubtedly chosen deliberately, but our eyes need some time to get used to it.

The Patek Philippe Cubitus Ref. 5821 has a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours

Inside the Patek Philippe Cubitus Ref. 5821 runs the Patek Philippe caliber 26-330 S C, a slim automatic. It has a central 21K gold rotor adorned with the same horizontal motif as the dial. The movement bears the Patek Philippe seal, which applies to all of their mechanical timepieces. It specifies an extreme rate accuracy with a tolerance of no more than -1/+2 seconds per day. The power reserve is 35 to 45 hours.

This Cubitus comes on an integrated steel (1A) or steel with rose gold (1AR) bracelet, satin-finished and polished. Closed by a steel fold-over clasp with lockable size-adjustment system. And if you want a Cubitus more complications and a case from precious metal, look at the Patek Philippe Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day and Moon Phases Ref. 5822P-001. It’s from platinum and sports a big date, day of the week and moon phase. Or just wait, as more variants will follow.
