The Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300GR-001 is today’s most complicated wristwatch the brand has ever produced. First launched in 2016 with ref. 6300G, in white gold, now dressed in a two-toned version combining white gold and rose gold. This reference 6300GR-001 is a newly designed Grandmaster Chime with a reversible double-sided case feature.

It’s an impressive 47.7 millimeters, with white gold and rose gold merged, and it displays a brown opaline dial adorned with hand-guilloched hobnail pattern. Which can also be found on the side of the case. The enormous size comes from the number of complications: no less than twenty. And like all Patek’s with a lot of functions, these complications are arranged properly. If you know how to identify them all.

So first, the dial where the main time is, with its gold applied Breguet numerals and gold hour and minute hands. On this time side, you can also see two sub dials located at 12 and 6 o’clock. The additional 24-hour hand (GMT) is at the 12 o’clock position, with an alarm on/off indication inside and day/night indication on the right of it. The sub dial with the moon phase and date indicator sits at 6. The later is a bit strange as the 31st and 1st of each month reads as ‘311’, as they are depicted very close to each other. Which is the same at the other site of the case. But we’re still at the front.

A strike mode display (SGP) is placed left from the moon phase between 7 and 8 o’clock. On its opposite side is the crown position indication (RAH) which is positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock. The movement and strike work power reserve indications are placed at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock, where you can also find a very small aperture to indicate whether the strike work isolator is on or off.

The strike work of the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300GR-001 has a power reserve of 30 hours

On the other side of the watch, the calendar side, is a complete perpetual calendar visualized by four sub dials. In the middle is a small window for the years displayed with four independently rotating digit plates. From top and then clockwise, you will find a 24-hour time indication with hours and minutes. Then the month, the date (again) and leap-year cycle, and the day of the week.

Of course, the chime function of this extremely advanced time piece is another highlight. The watch has a grande and petite sonnerie, and a minute repeater with classic gongs. So, you can let this Patek chime each quarter with all the hours (grande) or just each quarter without the hours (petite): the hours only chime when passing a full hour. And then of course it can also chime the minutes on request – the minute repeater. And when there are gongs in a watch you can also mount an alarm function: it chimes at the time you have set. Patek has added a date repeater as well – good for your wedding date. The crown, together with a handful of (corrector) pushers around the case, let you set all its functions.

Inside the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300GR-001 is a hand-wound Patek Philippe caliber 300 GS AL 36‑750 QIS FUS IRM. It delivers a power reserve of 72 hours for the time and date functions and has an extra 30 hours for the strike work.

The 2016 white gold Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Ref. 6300G-001 has a price near the 2.5 million dollar at the time, so this new one probably has at least the price tag.
