The Patek Philippe Retrograde Perpetual Calendar Rare Handcrafts Ref. 5160/500R is part of the brand’s Grand Complications line. For a reason, as this Officer-styled model offers a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date hand, and the day, month and leap year in apertures. Furthermore, there is a moon phase at the 6 o’clock position and a central gold-toned sweep seconds hand.
What catches the eye first is the classic, almost clock-like appearance. The time piece is full of hand-engraved decorations giving it very baroque looks. A pocket watch in Patek’s own museum forms the inspiration for the engravings composed of volutes and foliage. Which you can find on the case, bezel, crown, lugs, clasp and even in the middle of the dial.
The back shows a classic engraved dust cover
If you flip the watch, you will find an engraved dust cover. Open it and there is a sapphire case back that reveals the movement. With the cover closed this Ref. 5160/500R has a thickness of 11.81 millimeters, the diameter of the rose gold case is only 38 millimeters.
The silvery opaline dial has an 18k gold dial plate and blackened white gold applied Breguet numerals. The hour and minute hands as well as the retrograde date hand are also black, the date hand has a clear red tip to distinguish it from the other two.

All is driven by the Patek Philippe caliber 26-330 S QR, an automatic with a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours. It has a 21k gold central rotor and it is finely decorated.
The Patek Philippe Retrograde Perpetual Calendar Rare Handcrafts Ref. 5160/500R comes on a patinated brown alligator leather strap. It has square scales and is hand-stitched, and secured with a hand-engraved rose gold fold-over clasp.
