Do you wonder why watch brands release models with the bones of a human head on the dial, like this Perrelet Turbine Skull? It’s a traditional thing, a symbol of mortality, associated with the phrase “Memento Mori”. Which means “remember you must die”. Sounds harsh, but it’s just a philosophical expression of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death.
Perrelet expresses this with an artistic creation of their 44-millimeter Turbine model, with the renewed 12 blades on the dial side. Here in blue or black anodized aluminium, with 5 tungsten counterweights positioned below the blades. Under the turbines is a silvered lower dial with guilloché finish and a three-dimensional skull in relief, best visible when the turbines are spinning.
The Perrelet Turbine Skull has a power reserve of 42 hours
The movement of the Perrelet Turbine Skull is the Perrelet caliber P-331-MH manufactured by Soprod. This manufacturer has the same owner as Perrelet. It’s an automatic with a power reserve of 42 hours and it is Chronofiable and COSC certified.
The first comes from the Laboratoire Dubois of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Their certification assesses the operational reliability of a product using accelerated cycles of ageing that best reproduce real-life conditions of the wearer.
Price tag of 4 to 5k
This caliber has a main plate with snailing finish, rhodium plated, and with rhodium plated bridges with circular-graining finish. The open-worked, rhodium plated oscillating weight has the Perrelet logo engraved.
Both models come on a calf leather strap with alligator pattern, lined with rubber, and are limited to 99 pieces each. The stainless steel with black PVD version costs about 200 more than the regular stainless steel version. Which has a 4 to 5k price tag.
