The Roger Dubuis Knights of the Round Table – The Omniscient Merlin brings Arthurian legends to life and your wrist. The brand has created a few timepieces dedicated to the Knights of the Round Table. Here with the magical tale of Merlin. The story of the Knights of the Round Table is a legendary medieval tale. However, its origins are not completely historical.

The knights were said to have served under King Arthur in the 5th and 6th centuries AD in Britain, though the full details are shrouded in myth and legend. These Knights of the Round Table were King Arthur’s elite knights who gathered at the Round Table in Camelot. Which is the legendary castle and court of King Arthur, pursuing quests, upholding chivalry, and protecting the kingdom.

Who is Merlin in these legend?

In the Arthurian legends, Merlin is the powerful wizard and sorcerer who acts as a mentor and advisor to King Arthur. Merlin is often portrayed as a wise, elderly magician who uses his supernatural powers to assist and guide Arthur throughout his reign. He plays a key role in many of the stories and the establishment of Camelot.

To honor Arthur’s uncle, the great King Pendragon, it is said that Merlin once used his magic to lift the hexagonal stones from the Giant’s Causeway and transport them to England. There he built an immortal monument that some believe to be Stonehenge. The Giant’s Causeway is a unique geological formation located in Northern Ireland. It consists of tens of thousands of interlocking basalt columns, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. The unusual hexagonal rock structures have become a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Knights and rocks on the dial

The case is executed in gold and measures 45 millimeters. To depict this story of Merlin lifting rocks Roger Dubuis has created 12 micro-sculpted knights. Each of approximately 6 millimeters in height, and each is in a battle-ready pose. All 12 knights are different and each takes three days to make. They are positioned on a pink gold base plate that forms the dial.

On top of that plate are also 56 blocks made of pink gold (9), black glass (19), and genuine basalt (28). The latter is the stone from which the Giant’s Causeway is made. The miniature blocks are sized in the range of 0.2 to 3.7 millimeters. Besides the blocks are oblique, accentuating the perspective effect on the dial, creating this magical and complex marquetry. Another cool detail: the crown protector is shaped like the guard of a sword, which Merlin helped Arthur pull from the stone.

The Roger Dubuis Knights of the Round Table – The Omniscient Merlin has a power reserve of 48 hours

The marquetry is static, only the hands move. These are driven by the automatic Roger Dubuis caliber RD821 from which they left out the central seconds function. The movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours and is visible through the case back. It has a décor of rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève decoration and Poinçon de Genève finishings. The oscillating weight is inspired by the stained-glass windows of medieval castles.

This Roger Dubuis Knights of the Round Table – The Omniscient Merlin comes on an interchangeable black leather strap. Closed by a triple folding clasp with pink gold cover and titanium blades. The price tag of this watch is well over 300k and it is limited to 28 pieces only.
