At Baselworld 2013 Swatch surprised us with Sistem51, a collection of Swiss made automatic watches for a remarkable low price. From late 2016 on, they add a range of some very attractive – and much anticipated – stainless steel watches to this series; the Swatch Sistem51 Irony.

The 51-part movement, held together by just one screw, is a genuine feat of engineering, but it deserved a bit more than the plastic cases and novelty design Swatch served up. With this new Irony line, the Swiss brand delivers their entry mechanical movement in a – industry standard – 316L stainless steel case of approximately 40 millimeters. Power-reserve is an impressive 90 hours, with a claimed accuracy of 7 seconds (+/-) every 24 hours. Each movement is machine build, its accuracy adjusted by laser before dropped in its case.

The Swatch Sistem51 Irony is an automatic that does not need any service

The new line consists of the classic looking Sistem Earth, with a brown leather strap, the blue faced Sistem Boreal and Sistem Fly, the flashy looking Sistem Tux in two-tone, the Sistem Soul with black leather strap and our favorite, the vintage pilot-watch inspired Sistem Arrow in brushed stainless steel with a rubber band. The case back is transparent so you can see the 51 parts, including 19 jewels, do their accurate work.

Pricing is not much up from the current Sistem51 line-up: 175 dollar / euro’s or 127 pounds buys you the entry level leather strapped models up to 35 dollars / euro’s for the gold colored PVD Tux.
