The Autavia is back this year. In March the TAG Heuer Autavia 2017 was launched, a remake of the famous Jochen Rindt model from 1966. And now the iconic chronograph for racing drivers is back again with this TAG Heuer Autavia Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition.
The TAG Heuer Autavia Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition is made in honor of the 85th birthday of Mr. Heuer. Therefore, the chronograph is made in a limited edition of 1932 pieces, the birthyear of this living piece of watch royalty.
TAG Heuer describes the new Autavia as a neo-retro successor of the first wrist chronograph with rotating bezel that was created in 1962. The name Autavia is a combination of AUTomobile and AVIAtion. It was the name of the first dash counter for racing cars and aircrafts created by Heuer in 1933. At that time, the brand name was Heuer. The name was changed into TAG Heuer in 1985. The Autavia Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition is designed by Jack himself and is modern (with a diameter of 42 millimeters instead of the original 39 millimeters) but faithful to its roots nonetheless.
Its functions are tailored to what we expect of a watch nowadays: a self-winding caliber, a sufficient power-reserve of 80 hours, date at 6 o’clock and a water-resistance of 100 meters. The polished stainless steel case has a notched black aluminum bezel that encircles a silver dial with three black snailed counters. Extremely legible, as you might expect, with hands and applique indexes in steel, coated with super-luminova.
The TAG Heuer Autavia Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition is engraved with Mr. Heuer’s signature on the case back in addition to the words: ‘Jack Heuer 85th Birthday Edition’. Watch the video below the technical data for an impression of the watch.
