The alarm works through a (separate) manually-wound mechanism that activates a small hammer, striking a sound-producing surface like a gong. This generates a distinct, often pleasant buzzing sound, alerting the wearer discreetly without the need for electronic beeps.

These beeps, often louder and a little easier to hear, are the sound of quartz driven watches with an alarm.  These are powered by batteries or solar, and have a small speaker(-like device) and/or a buzzing device. Just like your mobile phone.
