collection Patek Philippe Nautilus
The Patek Philippe Nautilus collection, introduced in 1976, marked the brand’s entry into the luxury sports watch market. The model is designed by Gérald Genta, who, among other models, also designed the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (in 1972). The Nautilus featured a distinctive porthole-inspired case, integrating the bezel into the watch’s overall shape. Its steel construction and bold design departed from the traditional precious metal dress watches for which Patek Philippe was known.
.
The Nautilus Reference 3700/1A, the first in the line, measured 42 millimeters wide, earning the nickname “Jumbo” due to its size. It housed the automatic caliber 28-255C movement, a thin and reliable engine. Water resistance of up to 120 meters also sets it apart, making it both elegant and functional.
.
Over the decades, the Nautilus has evolved, incorporating new materials and complications. The reference 5711, introduced in 2006 to celebrate the model’s 30th anniversary, became one of the most coveted wristwatches in recent years. Collectors value its blue dial and simple three-hand layout.
.
In 2021, Patek Philippe announced the discontinuation of the 5711, increasing demand. The final version, released with a green dial, signaled the end of an era for this iconic model. Today, the Nautilus remains a symbol of sport-luxury watchmaking. Here you can read more about the history of Patek Philippe.
