This movement has a rich history going back to the 1940s when its predecessor was developed, and the 1970s when it was introduced as 7750. However, only since 1985, has it been produced in larger numbers. The name is a bit confusing as ETA is a movement manufacturer and Valjoux was as well. ETA was acquired by the Swatch Group in 1985 which also had bought (the remains of) Valjoux already. So they kind of blended them into a movement manufacturer within the Swatch Group called ETA.

The history of the ETA/Valjoux caliber 7750 starts in 1948
.
The history of the ETA/Valjoux caliber 7750 starts in 1948 with the launch of the Venus caliber 188, a manual-winding chronograph. When Valjoux bought Fabrique d’Ebauches Venus S.A. in the early 1960s, they continued to develop this Venus 188, in the end resulting in the Valjoux caliber 7733. A cam-switching chronograph, hand-wound, that was launched in 1969. And that resulted in the automatic Valjoux caliber 7750 in 1973.
.
When ETA incorporated Valjoux, they improved the 7750 even further, naming it the ETA caliber 7750 Valjoux or simply ETA 7750. So, if you have an old chronograph with three registers and day-date it can be an original Valjoux caliber 7750 (with 17 jewels).

Most popular versions of the 7750
.
The “new” ETA/Valjoux caliber 7750 can have three or four grades (it’s a bit unclear): base, élaboré, top, and COSC. And there are a couple of variants:
ETA caliber 7751: automatic with sub dials at 6/9/12 o’clock, central date hand, moon phase at 6 and day/month at 12
ETA caliber 7753: automatic with sub dials at 3/6/9 o’clock and date at 4
ETA caliber 7754: automatic with sub dials at 6/9/12 o’clock, date at 3 and central GMT hand
ETA caliber 7760: hand-wound with sub dials at 6/9/12 and day/date at 3
ETA caliber 7765: hand-wound with sub dials at 9/12 and date at 3
.
Although all the automatic above have 3 registers, you can also find watches with a 7750 and 2 registers. And not every watch with a 7750 has a day or date displayed. As ETA / Swatch Group does not deliver their products to competitors, many other watch brands seeking a 7750-based caliber use the Sellita SW500 a. This movement has the same specs as it is a (legal) copy of the 7750.
