Since 1846, Ulysse Nardin was famous amongst naval commanders and merchant captains for their marine chronometers. Built upon that history there have been a lot of impressive timepieces by the Swiss watchmaker. Like this Ulysse Nardin Classic Perpetual Ludwig.

The watch is named after its inventor, Ludwig Oeschlin. Master watchmaker Ludwig Oechslin was renowned for his knack of finding direct solutions to the most complex problems. He found simplicity in complexity that was behind their first perpetual calendar timepiece in 1996.

Because this isn’t exactly a new watch, not by a long shot, but it is still one of the most inventive perpetual calendars ever. The thing is that all calendar displays and thus the mechanism, can be set forwards and backwards via the crown. Extremely handy for a chronometer and it was unprecedented in the watchmaking world.

The Ulysse Nardin Classic Perpetual Ludwig is conservative and striking at the same time

The heart of the Classic Perpetual Ludwig is Ulysse Nardin’s UN-33 movement. It drives the calendar settings on the dial: the big date in its double window, month, day and year as well as the small seconds. All of which can be seen on the silver dial with baton markers and classic blue hands in a 41-millimeter steel case. A bit larger than the 38.5 millimeter of the original from 1996.

The Ulysse Nardin Classic Perpetual Ludwig is not the most extreme watch, perhaps even a bit conservative, but striking nonetheless. The connoisseur takes one look at it and realizes the complexity and uniqueness of the perpetual calendar. And it’s historical significance. Sometimes that’s just what you want. For more ‘out there’ and modern perpetual calendars, there is more than enough. Just take a look at the latest perpetual calendars.
