The Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition is another execution of Zenith’s three-hander, this time a collaboration with the Collective Horology. This limited edition of 200 pieces reimagines the Defy Skyline model with a minimalist, industrial design. Something you can also say about most of the at least ten (!) new models from Zenith’s Defy Skyline collection released this year.

This collection traces its origins to the original Zenith Defy wristwatch from 1969. Known for its robust construction and distinctive design, the Defy series has evolved over the decades. And it looks like this year, it is reaching its peak when it comes to releasing new models. This makes them less unique but allows more variation.

Collective Horology is a watch retailer that also releases collaborative watches to reach watch aficionados around the world. Just like Watches of Switzerland, Hodinkee, or Time+Tide for example. This Zenith is the 10th collaboration watch for Collective Horology.

Matte silvery-grey dial

This Defy Skyline C.X Edition features a 41-millimeter stainless steel case with a sandblasted matte finish, complemented by a polished edge on the dodecagonal bezel. The dial presents a matte silvery-grey color with a starry sky pattern, where four-pointed stars are engraved deeper at the center, creating a gradient effect.

The 1/10th of a second indicator is positioned at 6 o’clock, which is new-ish as all other models from this year have the small seconds at 9. It is caused by the used movement, but we’ll get back to that later. Orange accents on the indicator’s tip and the “10” mark add a touch of color. As it is Collective Horology’s 10th edition. Another difference with the other recently released Defy Skylines is the absence of a date.

Key features of the Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition

  • Gradient starry sky pattern on dial
  • 1/10th of a second indicator
  • Limited edition
  • Exhibition case back

Skeleton movement

Powering the watch is the Zenith caliber El Primero 3620 SK. This is a skeletonized Zenith caliber El Primero 3620 without a date function. automatic high-frequency caliber. This movement operates at a high 36,000 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 55 hours. The skeletonized movement is only visible through the sapphire display back, and the movement features a special oscillating weight with satin finishings.

The C.X Edition comes with an interchangeable integrated stainless steel bracelet and an additional orange textured rubber strap, both equipped with a steel folding clasp. Its quick strap-change mechanism allows for easy swapping without tools.

Price of the Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition

Priced at 11,000 to 13,000, the Defy Skyline C.X Edition positions itself in the luxury sports watch segment. But it is also a serious price for a three-hander. It is limited, which will always cost you some extra, and the movement is more unique than most competitors in this segment.

Nevertheless, a steel three-hander watch for plus 10k is not the best deal you can get. This Zenith Defy Skyline Skeleton Boutique Edition looks more unique and has a comparable price tag for instance. A less unique Rolex Oyster Perpetual is 30 percent less expensive (if you can buy one) and a 41-millimeter Datejust has the same price level as this Zenith. Life ain’t easy…
